HYPOTHALAMIC PITUITARY ADRENAL AXIS FUNCTION IN ADOLESCENT ANTISOCIAL FEMALES

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. To characterize the function of the HPA axis in adolescent girls with CD and compare it to girls who do not have CD (NCD) by the following methods: a) Determine if overall diurnal cortisol activity, measured by 7 saliva samples during a 24-hour period, is lower in CD than in NCD girls; b) Investigate whether the HPA axis response to psychological stress, as measured by plasma adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and serum cortisol levels, is blunted in CD girls compared to NCD girls; c) Determine if the HPA axis in CD girls will respond similarly to that of NCD girls when supplied with exogenous corticotropin releasing hormone, (CRH); d) Assess the effects of the following variables on HPA axis function: exposure to adverse life events, use of substances, sleep patterns, season, pre-test physical activity and psychological arousal, and oral contraceptives. If an effect is found, the variable(s) will be statistically controlled in the analyses.
