To characterize the function of the HPA axis in adolescent girls with CD and compare it to girls who do not have CD (NCD) by the following methods: a) Determine if overall diurnal cortisol activity, measured by 7 saliva samples during a 24-hour period, is lower in CD than in NCD girls; b) Investigate whether the HPA axis response to psychological stress, as measured by plasma adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and serum cortisol levels, is blunted in CD girls compared to NCD girls; c) Determine if the HPA axis in CD girls will respond similarly to that of NCD girls when supplied with exogenous corticotropin releasing hormone, (CRH); d) Assess the effects of the following variables on HPA axis function: exposure to adverse life events, use of substances, sleep patterns, season, pre-test physical activity and psychological arousal, and oral contraceptives. If an effect is found, the variable(s) will be statistically controlled in the analyses.
