项目摘要
The Region VIII Center of Excellence will help address the critical national need to increase human resource
capacity in emerging infectious diseases, whether resulting from purposeful or natural events. The
Specialized Biodefense Training in Basic Research project will provide individualized biodefense career
development training and will focus upon advanced post-doctoral and professional degree scientists, junior
or senior faculty, or others who seek career opportunities in biodefense and emerging diseases research
and response. The Basic Research program will provide opportunities for trainees at any of the RCE
research nodes.
The Specialized Biodefense Career Development Program in Basic Science will result in well-trained, career
emergent professionals ready to expand the available human resource pool in an area of vital national need.
The program will provide broadly-based professionals who are not only expert in one or more areas of basic
science, but trained in applications and procedures that broaden their approaches to NIH priority pathogens
and HHS/USDA select agents. The Basic Science Program will have a recruitment committee. Candidates
will be solicited by advertisement in national publications, selected for their interest and preparation for a
career in infectious diseases basic research, and will have completed Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M. degrees and
some postdoctoral work. Each candidate will be aligned with an appropriate mentor from the Region VIII
RCE faculty, take required courses in biosafety / biosecurity and research ethics, rotate through one or more
thematic areas central to the Region VIII RCE mission, and perform research with a participating faculty
member. Progress will be monitored by the Program Director in collaboration with each trainee's mentor.
Trainees are expected to develop independent research thrusts that will complement the Region VIII RCE
mission, and to submit proposals for independent funding appropriate for junior investigators within two
years.
