This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Administrative Core (AC) continued to be responsible for managing various aspects of the RI-INBRE Program, including budgets, expenditures, subcontracts, personnel matters, communication with NCRR and participating institutions, review of new research subprojects and Pilot Projects, organizing Steering Committee (SC) and External Advisory Committee (EAC) meetings, program-related travel, development and administration of surveys for program evaluation, collection of data and preparation of the annual progress report. Frequent meetings of the AC and other core coordinators were held to resolve issues and plan program activities. Issues related to policy matters were discussed at the SC and the EAC meetings. A survey instrument for program assessment was developed and administered to all participants. The completed surveys were forwarded to an external evaluator who analyzed the results and summarized the salient findings. The report of the external evaluator was provided to the AAAS site visit team prior to their visit on April 23-25, 2007. In response to the AAAS panel recommendations, and in consultation with the SC and EAC, an action plan was developed and implemented. A follow up survey to track the progression of past students was conducted during the present fiscal year and the results were analyzed by a consultant. Further details are provided in the overall program summary in this APR. The first of three SC meetings was on July 25, 2007 and the second on January 25, 2008. The third meeting is planned for April, 2008. Items discussed at the two meetings included: 1) announcement of the competitive renewal of the INRE grant; 2) student surveys and tracking; 3) program for the summer retreat; 4) vacancy created by departure of an investigator from Providence College; 5) AAAS site visit panel report and RI-INBRE action plan; 6) mentoring committee reports and recommendations for continuation of support; and 7) strategies for successful renewal of the INBRE grant. The first EAC meeting was held on August 9, 2007. The committee discussed and approved the action plan recommended by the SC and was updated on other program activities. One of the recommendations of the AAAS site visit panel was to increase the membership of the EAC with additional expertise in undergraduate student research. Thus a new member from San Jose State University was introduced at this meeting. A summary of the minutes of the EAC meeting is included with this APR. The next meeting of the EAC is scheduled for April 18, 2008.
