This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Administrative Core (AC) managed various aspects of the RI-INBRE Program, including budgets, expenditures, subcontracts, personnel matters, communication with NCRR and participating institutions, review of new research subprojects and Pilot Projects, committee meetings, program-related travel, and collection of data and preparation of the annual progress report (APR). Frequent interactions with the coordinators of the other cores facilitated quick resolutions of issues related to program management. Regular meetings of the AC were also scheduled at weekly or biweekly intervals. Issues related to policy matters were discussed at the Steering Committee (SC) and the External Advisory Committee (EAC) meetings. The SC held three meetings, two in May and November of 2006, and one jointly with the EAC in January, 2007. Discussed items included: 1) status of ongoing faculty searches; 2) acquisition of videoconferencing equipment; 3) access of primarily undergraduate institution (PUI) investigators to online journals; 4) highlights of the national IDeA Program Meeting; 5) highlights of INBRE Directors Meeting; 6) review of Pilot Project applications; 7) plans for Winter and Summer Retreats; and 8) policy for progress review of PUI investigators. The EAC held two meetings, one in June 2006 and the other in January 2007. Their meeting summaries are included with this APR. A major accomplishment was successful completion of searches for six new investigators, made possible by offering competitive startup packages through carryover of unobligated funds from the previous year. All new subprojects received approval for inclusion in RI-INBRE by the EAC and NCRR. A survey instrument for program assessment was developed and will be administered to all participants. The completed surveys will be forwarded to an external evaluator who will summarize the salient findings. These will be provided to the AAAS Research Competitiveness Service panel that will visit in April 2007 to review the RI-INBRE Program.
