INBRE:URI: ADMINISTRATIVE CORE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Members of the administrative core (AC) managed the Network with input from the Steering Committee (SC) and the External Advisory Committee (EAC). The SC held three meetings, including a joint meeting with the EAC at the Winter Retreat in January 2006. The issues discussed included: 1) the role and responsibilities of the mentors; 2) evaluation of INBRE investigators; 3) further development and refinement of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program; 4) Centralized Research Core facility policies; 5) review of Pilot Project applications; 6) revision of goals and expectations of investigators at the primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs); and 7) strategies for attracting new faculty to Rhode Island institutions. Throughout the year, the EAC chair was kept abreast of the new developments and the EAC members continued to be responsible for reviewing the new research proposals. The EAC is scheduled to meet in June at the Summer Retreat. The smooth operation of the AC is facilitated by the proximity of the offices of its members, promoting daily interaction and attention to Program-related activities. With the other core leaders, the Program Director and Program Coordinator held meetings on an as-needed basis. They were also involved in new faculty searches at the PUIs and at the University of Rhode Island (URI) and in filling a vacant research associate position for the Core Facility. The AC staff managed the fiscal and all other aspects of the Program, including data collection, preparation of the progress report, subcontracts, review of Pilot Project and regular research proposals, student recruitment, and arrangement of committee meetings, travel, and retreats. In order to form an instrument for program evaluation, the AC consulted with the INBRE programs at Maine, Delaware and New Mexico, and with the education department at URI. A visit to Delaware is planned for this purpose later this year.
