ASCORBATE METABOLOME IN THE VITREOUS AND AQUEOUS HUMOR OF THE EYE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Project Summary: We wish to analyze the metabolites resulting from the reaction of ascorbate with oxygen in model reactions and in the vitreous and aqueous humors of the eye. We recently found that the reaction of ascorbate (and, possibly, its metabolites) with oxygen protect the lens against excessive exposure to oxygen from the retina. Excess exposure to oxygen is likely to be the primary cause of nuclear cataracts, the most common type of age-related cataracts. Measuring the products of this reaction will allow us to determine the relative rate of ascorbate degradation in the eye.
