The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate into AceylCoA linking glycolysis to the Kreb Cycle during cellular respiration. Defects in this enzyme generally are fatal. PDC has an icosahedral dihydrolipoyl transacetylase (E2p) core which is surrounded by 12 copies of dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (E3). These E3 protiens are attached to the E2p core via 12 copies of E3-binding protein (E3BP) by non-covalent protein-protein interactions.
