英文摘要
The proposed collaboration with Amrita University in India aims to develop laser synthesis of quantum materials with ultrashort laser ablation. Recent investigations at Toronto Metropolitan University have demonstrated that MHz repetition frequency femtosecond lasers are a useful tool for the synthesis of nanostructures. A range of nanostructures¬ can be generated by irradiating the surfaces of bulk materials - like glass, metals, and natural materials - under atmospheric conditions. The smallest diameter of the generated is around 5 nanometres (nm). The collaboration will investigate the feasibility of extending this technique to create quantum materials with dimensions less than 2 nm. The research program involves both experimental modelling and process investigation. Major modelling includes investigation of thermal coupling during multi-shot ablation, building mathematical model for localised heating with femtosecond laser irradiation, and thermal diffusion model for ablation with dual wavelength. To pursue potential applications of these nanomaterials, the optical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties created materials will be characterized. Amrita University provides expertise in fundamentals laser physics and laser-matter interaction, with recent research activities focusing on laser-based synthesis of nanostructure for energy, sensing and biomedical applications. The goal of this collaborative work is to develop a synthesis process for the generation of quantum materials, with potential applications in many Canadian industries. Furthermore, this project provides an excellent opportunity for training highly qualified personnel.
