METAL IDENTIFICATION IN LUNG TISSUE IN AUTOPSY CASES FROM MEXICO CITY RESIDENTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Previous work in our laboratory had indicated an increase in metal content in lung tissue through time, possible related to an increase in suspended particle atmospheric pollution. The metals, which increased over a 30-year period, were Ni, Cd, Mn, Pb, Co Zn and V, as.determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. This time we would like to identify with more detail the presence of metals in lung tissue by x-ray fluorescence and to speciate them using micro-XANES, on beamline 2-3. Transmission x-ray microscopy and 3D tomography on beamline 6-2 would identify the specific area in which the particles with the metals are deposited.The identification of the metals as well as characterization of the site of deposition will help to understand better the possible damage that particles are inducing to the tissue.
