Abstract The proposal describes a 3-hour Symposium consisting of five expert presenters and four short talks from trainees entitled The Environment and Gene Expression, Role of the Epigenome. The interaction of genes and the environment has been an important focus topic for some time. The goal of achieving a direct connection between given environmental exposures to given gene expression alterations and then to a given phenotype has been elusive however. Moreover, transgenerational effects of environmental damage are well documented but not completely understood. As information surrounding epigenetic regulation of gene expression grows it is logical to attempt to use environmental alteration of epigenetic control as a link between exposure and disease. In recent years this link has been empirically strengthened. Exploring the role of environmental alteration of the epigenome in human disease is the subject of the proposed symposium. The symposium has been approved by the Program Committee of the American Society of Experimental Pathology (ASIP) at the EB 2019 meeting in Orlando FL April 6-10, 2019. The specific aims of the meeting are to 1) establish a forum for the discussion of the latest data linking specific alterations from known environmental exposure in both population and model system studies in a setting that is well attended and interdisciplinary 2) inform scientists from a broad range of scientific interests about the molecular mechanisms of endocrine disruption and other toxic exposures by known chemical exposures and 3) foster the growth of collaborative activity of the most current areas of experimentation around the role of chromatin landscape in regulation of gene expression with the best of environmental exposure science. The symposium will be embedded in the Experimental Biology annual meeting that typically has more than 14,000 registrants and will be under the aegis of the ASIP.
