This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall goal of this activity, originally funded in 2002, was to improve animal research resources in support of RCMI- and other PHS-funded programs. Three separate projects in the Biomedical Sciences Building on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus were originally approved for funding: development of a rodent surgical suite; acquisition of ventilated caging systems to improve animal housing; and acquisition of an alkaline hydrolysis unit to replace an obsolete incinerator. Due to a variety of delays because of a devastating flood in October 2004 and rising costs, the projects were initially delayed. Although a number of biomedical researchers have moved to the new Kaka'ako campus, the Manoa campus animal colony facilities have all been consolidated into Biomedical Sciences Building. The RCMI-funded projects are providing major upgrades of the facilities.
