项目摘要
Recruitment of Individuals From Under-Represented Groups. We have always been very successful
recruiting women to our programs with relatively little directed recruitment, i,e., 70% to 80% of Brown's
postdoctoral fellows are typically women. Nonetheless, we will monitor our recruitment of female trainees.
Our efforts to recruit trainees from under-represented groups are tied to our programs that are committed to
maximizing the number of minority applicants. We have had success in recruiting minorities into our training
programs. For example, in the past three years, three African-American women joined our programs. Dr. Emma
Simmons, a physician and Dr. Georita Frierson, a clinical psychologist, are trainees funded by minority supplements
on the R25T transdisciplinary cancer training grant. Andrea Taylor is also completing her predoctoral internship
training at Brown. These successes are a result of a number of steps we have taken to increase diversity among our
trainees and faculty. We have the support and assistance of Alicia Monroe, M.D., Associate Dean of Medical
Minority Affairs, and the administrative assistance of the Office of Minority Medical Affairs, coordinated by Ms.
Monika Bolino. For psychology trainees, we advertise in Psych Discourse: the Newsjournat of the Association of
Black Psychologists. The Psychology Training Office also contacts the APA Office of Minority Affairs to seek their
suggestions and try to identify possible applicants for a more proactive search. We have developed a formal
collaborative relationship with graduate program in clinical psychology at Jackson State University, a predominantly
black college in Mississippi. As part of this relationship we provide summer training experiences for minority
graduate students who are interested in considering a career in research. We advertise our program by letter and
brochures, using the infomaational base of the Office of Medical Minority Affairs, to such programs as the Center for
Institutional Cooperation, based at the University of Illinois and the Minority and Women Doctoral Directory,
Berkeley, California. Programs such as the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program, and Minority Access to
Research Careers, that include students who are heading for academic careers, are contacted by Dean Monroe in an
effort to inform them of the opportunities available in the University, to stimulate interest in the University through
student visits and faculty seminars, and to attract students who may subsequently be candidates for the training
program. Finally, to encourage minority applicants to visit Brown for an interview, the DPHB has established a fund
of $2000 per year to help defray travel expenses of minority applicants.
