项目摘要

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Thyroid hormone, whose synthesis is dependent on adequate iodine, is essential during the critical period of neurodevelopment. Breastfed infants are completely reliant on maternal iodine for adequate iodine nutrition. We plan to determine whether iodine concentration in human breast milk varies within a feed. We plan to use our findings to design future studies assessing breast milk iodine adequacy in the US. In our study, we will measure iodine concentrations in serial breast milk samples obtained from 30 healthy volunteers during a single breastfeed. Breast milk and urine concentrations of the chemical perchlorate and the nicotine metabolite cotinine will also be measured, given their possible associations with breast milk iodine content. Additionally, the timing of breast milk samples in relation to maternal dietary iodine intake and iodine-containing multivitamin use will be recorded and analyzed.
