This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. We will assess insulin sensitivity, metabolic parameters and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function in 30 depressed women participating in our study and in 30 age- and weight-matched healthy control women. The purpose of this study is to find out whether insulin resistance and/or hyperglycemic trends parallel plasma cortisol levels in major depression and whether the treatment of depressive symptoms ameliorates such a state of insulin resistance.
