DEPRESSION AND METABOLIC SYNDROME IN MEXICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. We will assess insulin sensitivity, metabolic parameters and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function in 30 depressed women participating in our study and in 30 age- and weight-matched healthy control women. The purpose of this study is to find out whether insulin resistance and/or hyperglycemic trends parallel plasma cortisol levels in major depression and whether the treatment of depressive symptoms ameliorates such a state of insulin resistance.
