This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of this study is to: (1) Identify American Indians, Hispanics, Whites, African Americans and Asians with normal glucose tolerance, impaired glucose tolerance, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); (2) Determine the distributions of CD36 genotypes and describe the CD36 associated phenotypes; (3) Measure CD36 m-RNA levels and CD36 protein levels in platelets, adipocytes, and skeletal muscle; (4) Determine the relationships between fatty acid clearance and CD36 genotypes and other CD36 phenotypes; and (5) Determine if obesity patterns, glucose tolerance, insulin resistance indexes, lipid profile, and albuminuria are associated with CD36 m-RNA levels and CD36 protein levels in platelets, adipocytes, and skeletal muscle cells.
