This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of this study is to: (1) Identify American Indians, Hispanics, Whites, African Americans and Asians with normal glucose tolerance, impaired glucose tolerance, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); (2) Determine the distributions of CD36 genotypes and describe the CD36 associated phenotypes; (3) Measure CD36 m-RNA levels and CD36 protein levels in platelets, adipocytes, and skeletal muscle; (4) Determine the relationships between fatty acid clearance and CD36 genotypes and other CD36 phenotypes; and (5) Determine if obesity patterns, glucose tolerance, insulin resistance indexes, lipid profile, and albuminuria are associated with CD36 m-RNA levels and CD36 protein levels in platelets, adipocytes, and skeletal muscle cells.
