This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The overall goals of this project are to investigate the role of moderate doses of ethanol in the pathogenesis of daytime hypoglycemic vulnerability in sulfonylurea-treated patients with type 2 diatetes. Specific mechanisms investigated include (1) possible direct suppression of counterregulatory hormone release, (2) direct or indirect suppression of hepatic glucose production, and/or (3) reduction of gastrointestinal function with a subsequent delay in carbohydrate absorption.
