SUDDEN SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS (SSNHL): MULTICENTER TREATMENT TRIAL

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Compare the efficacy of oral prednisone vs intratympanic methylprednisolone as primary treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) by conducting a randomized prospective clinical trial in subjects presenting within 14 days of SSNHL onset. Compare the relative risk of side effects and/or adverse events in the two treatment groups by documenting the major and minor adverse events and pain experienced by each study subject. Determine the proportion of severe-to-profound SSNHL subjects who achieve recovery to normal or near normal hearing when treated primarily within two weeks of SSNHL onset. Describe the natural history of treated SSNHL during a six month follow up interval.
