This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This research study is being performed in collaboration with other researchers who have formed a group called the Autoimmune Biomarkers Collaborative Network (ABCoN). These researchers are at the University of Minnesota, The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Alabama Rheumatologists, the University of North Carolina, Emory University, The Medical University of South Carolina, SurroMed Inc., in California and North Shore LIJ Research Institute in New York. The purpose of the ABCoN research study is to look for patterns of "gene expression" in participants with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This study may help determine whether gene expression patterns in peripheral blood cells differ in RA participants who respond to treatments versus participants who do not respond as well. Blood samples will also be used to search for proteins that may be useful markers of severity of rheumatoid arthritis in African Americans. There will be 400 subjects participating in this study and participation will last for 3 to 5 years. As part of the study, blood will be drawn to obtain genetic material (mainly DNA) circulating blood cells, and serum. This genetic material will be used to try to identify the "genetic factors" or genes that a person inherits that make him or her more likely to develop RA. In addition, RNA will be obtained from blood cells to look for patterns of "gene expression". These blood samples will also be used to search for proteins in blood or on the surface of cells that may be useful markers of disease or drug responsiveness. Over the course of the study, a specific gene or genes that cause rheumatoid arthritis may be identified. DNA and RNA may be tested for those genes to further explore their role in the cause of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Testing results will be shared with participants and participants will be followed to observe if there are changes in certain findings such as disease progression and quality of life.
