This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of this study is to better understand the biologic response to stress by the endocrine system. We hope that this study will lead to a better understanding of the relationship between stress hormones and the developing brain, and how these are related to child behavior and family stress.
Participating in this study will require 2 visits with research personnel; one visit being completed at the participant's home, and one clinical visit to the GCRC. The first visit will occur after informed consent is signed and will include approximately two to three hours of structured interviewing questions. The GCRC visit will include psychological testing, 4 samples of saliva to measure salivary cortisol, and approximately 30 ml sample of blood to examine cortisol, cell count, thyroid function tests, lead levels, markers of metabolic syndrome, growth failure. In addition, urine and blood will be collected and stored for possible DNA testing in the future.
