This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
A. Specific Aims /Objectives
A cohort of children with HCV infection and healthy controls matched for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and Tanner stage will be studied to evaluate whether:
1) HCV infection is associated with IR in children
2) Clearance of HCV infection improves IR in children
3) HCV infection correlates with higher TNF-alpha and lower adiponectin levels and these, in turn, correlate with IR both cross-sectionally as well as longitudinally
Through the above aims, the following hypotheses will be tested:
1) HCV infection is associated with IR in children
2) Clearance of HCV infection reduces IR in children
3) Inflammatory adipokines mediate the development of HCV-associated IR
