This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This is a multi-center NIH-funded study with additional support from two commercial sources. The stated goal of this phase III study is "to determine whether the combination of interferon beta 1-a (Avonex) and glatiramer acetate (Copaxone) is an effective therapy for relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis". A total of 20 patients (from the total of 1000 sought at 86 centers) will be seen at the GCRC. This is a large scale randomized clinical trial comparing the effects of a combination of two common interventions to each treatment alone (i.e., no placebo). The outcome on which efficacy will be compared is the relapse rate, the anticipated effect size of the combination is 35% in the relapse rate relative to either therapy alone.
