This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Epidemiology and Bioinformatics (EB) core provides both scientific and technical resources for research projects at the University of Alaska Fairbanks through consultation and training, database (DB) development and management, sample size/power estimates, and data analyses. In addition, the EB core offers "technical support," such as computer hard/software information and data entry. Current year accomplishments include: A. Establishment and management of six databases: three for CANHR research projects, two for affiliated projects in psychology, and one for the CANHR participant feedback evaluation. To increase security and access to the research data over the web, we implemented an sql server. B. Development of "utility programs" that allow us to easily merge and transfer data for statistical analysis. Utility programs make it feasible to continuously perform routine biostatistical analyses for reports and provide statistical expertise for analysis of the research data. C. Management of data collection efforts (village orientation, recruitment, and data collection) in three new villages involving collaboration with local field research assistants and village leaders/elders. D. Dissemination of preliminary research findings to the traditional council and community members in one village. Individual laboratory results and other health measures were disseminated via letters to participants. Preliminary research findings were also presented in Bethel to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation and village leaders at the annual Tribal Gathering. In addition, the EB Core provides statistical consulting for grant applications.
