This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Previous research has suggested that employee engagement as well as other positive mood states are related to the well being and productivity of employees (Lyubormirsky et al. 2005, Harter et al., 2002). Additionally, a growing body of research has indicated that positive affect is related to decreased symptom reporting, and increased pain tolerance (Pressman & Cohen 2005), as well as decreased cortisol production in response to stressors. Furthermore, recent research has suggested that positive moods might counter the effect of negative moods on heart rate (Shapiro et al., 2001). This study aims to investigate how the Gallup Q12 Employee Engagement scale is associated with heart rate and cortisol as well as affect, symptom reporting and perceived stress.
This study also seeks to compare the self report of daily activities, mood, stress, pain and engagement collected using within-day diaries to the information collected using the Day Reconstruction Method (DRM), a one-day diary. An additional aim of this study is to examine pattern of weekday/weekend differences on heart rate and cortisol as well as measures of stress and mood. Lastly, this study seeks to examine within day associations between heart rate and cortisol and mood and perceived stress.
