This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. MTBE is a common gasoline additive and groundwater contaminant. Preliminary evidence indicates that MTBE alters mouse testosterone production and can lead to increased seminiferous tubule abnormalities. These observations have resulted in the hypothesis that MTBE is an endocrine disrupter which can alter male reproductive development when male mice and rats are exposed to MTBE in utero. Exposure of pregnant mice to MTBE during days 12-19 of gestation produced male offspring that exhibited a variable decrease in body weight and testis weight at 60 days of age. The possible effects of in utero MTBE exposure on 60 day old male rats will be examined in this project.
