Formation of amyloid fibrilar deposits occurs in a number of diseases and also appears to occur as a natural cause of certain epi-genetic changes of phenotype in yeast. Evidence that formation of amyloid seems to be generic to polypeptide chains suggests that the ability to identify specific positions in a protein sequence involved in oligomerization will allow a closer analysis of the underlying mechanism for amyloid formation in general, which is of interest in a large range of contexts, including major impacts on human health such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
