This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Sinusitis is a prominent disease among the otolaryngology patient population specifically and the human population in general. We will develop a 3-step object-based registration method that uses correlation of fuzzy distance transform maps of the sinuses segmented from 3He and proton MR images. 3He imaging yields signals from polarized helium injected inside the sinus air space while PD imaging captures anatomic information of the entire facial region. Due to this structural discrepancy in the two imaging protocols, the anatomic structues besides the sinus as captured in PD images behave as noise for a mutual information-based registration method. This observation motivated us to develop a new object based registration method that is sensitive to the current issues.
