This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Aims of this research are: a. To implement a homogenization description of perfused myocardium into a finite element model of the heart, and validate this model using 3-D ultrasound imaging. b. To develop a finite element model of the mitral valve using a nonlinear transversely isotropic material description, and validate it using 3-D deformation data c. To study the fluid mechanics interaction of the native heart and cardiovascular system with left ventricular assist devices. We are presently using Continuity for solid mechanics modeling of the heart and valve, particularly the ability to integrate our own material descriptions into the software. A new project (c) is focused on fluid mechanics, so the ability to couple or interface solutions from Continuity with our CFD software would enable the study of solid-fluid interactions which are of great interest in this area.
