SERUM 25(OH) VITAMIN D LEVELS IN GERIATRIC OUTPATIENTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Vitamin D levels have been shown to be low in many elderly patients. Vitamin D is important for strong bones. The use of vitamin D has been shown to reduce fractures and reduce the risk of falling. It is important for good health and may reduce the risk of cancer, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes mellitus. One goal of the study is to see if elderly patients at the Seniors Clinic are getting enough vitamin D from their diet and over-the-counter supplements. Another goal is to see if pharmacist education about diet and dietary supplements can increase vitamin D levels.
