SLEEP LOSS IN PATIENTS WITH ATOPIC DERMATITIS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Patients with atopic dermatitis often have trouble sleeping, although few studies of sleep in this group have been conducted. We are seeking to document sleep in a group of adults with atopic dermatitis by having them sleep in the National Jewish Sleep Research Unit for two nights. Two nights are necessary because of the interference with sleep that can occur the first time a person sleeps in the unfamiliar setting of the sleep laboratory. Full polysomnography, which measures details about how the person is sleeping, will be conducted both nights, but we will focus upon the sleep measurements from night two. We are also going to document sleep with a device called an Actigraph, which provides a simple measure of sleep compared to polysomnography, and is worn on the wrist. Finally patients will complete questionnaires about how well they slept and how poor sleep has affected their lives. Results from this study will help us better characterize sleep in patients with atopic dermatitis, and will allow us to ascertain the validity of the actigraph for measurement of sleep outside the laboratory in future atopic dermatitis studies.
