This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Cell & Molecular Core
Emel Songu-Mize, Ph.D. - Director
This core has three major support missions: Cell Culture, Proteomics, and Imaging. The facility is staffed by Jesse Guidry, Instructor and Olha Nichols, M.S.
CELL CULTURE
The core is continuing to supply primary and passaged cells for COBRE investigators. This includes rat aortic smooth muscle cells (users: Drs. Catling, Lucchesi, Wu, Songu-Mize), mouse macrophage cultures (user: Dr. Boulares), rat neonatal cardiac cell cultures (user: Dr. Wu), HUVEC cultures (user: Dr. Boulares). In addition to the above, the Cell Culture core facility developed additional cell lines of mouse mesenteric smooth muscle cells (Drs. Lucchesi, Catling, Songu-Mize), embryonic fibroblasts (Dr. Boulares).
The COBRE investigators are provided a weekly report of available cell lines, passage numbers, both the frozen supplies and thriving cultures. They in turn make their request for the following week. Ms. Nichols delivers to each investigator what they need.
PROTEOMICS AND IMAGING
The Proteomics Core is actively involved in analysis and identification of proteins through several different projects. This core provides a 2DE gel based analysis of protein samples from tissue and cell based experiments. This includes interactome analysis; fishing out proteins that interact with bait proteins (Drs. Varner, Lucchesi, Catling, Lanier and Wu), differential analysis of cell culture treatments (Drs. Boulares, Lanier, Wu) and differential analysis of animal model treatments (Drs. Boulares, Park).
The Proteomics Core feeds directly into the LSHHSC Proteomics Core which provides separate and distinct functions through the utilization of mass spectrometry. Through this close association, pure mass spectrometry applications are handled by Dr. Chau-Wen Chou. These include separation and analysis of peptides (Dr. Lazartigues) and modification analysis of proteins and enzymatic targets (Dr. Lanier).
Emel Songu-Mize
