Project 2: PI-Xinyu Zhao Specific Aims Hypothesis: NSCs respond to cytokines and chemokines released by ischemic cells by altering their expression patterns of MMPs and TIMPs, allowing them to migrate to the site of injury and restore function. Specific Aim 1. To characterize MMPs and TIMPs expressed by cultured NSCs under normal conditions and after stimulation by stroke-induced cytokines and chemoattractants. Specific Aim 2. To characterize the expression of MMPs and TIMPs within the SVZ after an MCAO Specific Aim 3. To assess the effects of MMPs on migration, survival and integration of transplanted adult NSCs in response to stroke using MRI and behavioral analyses.
