This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. A reduction in body temperature and an increase skin temperature (heat loss) are reported to be associated with faster times to fall asleep and possibly better sleep quality. We propose to test the influence of a new FDA approved sleeping pill called Ramelteon on temperature and daytime sleep in healthy adults. Ramelteon is a novel sleeping pill that is similar to the naturally occurring hormone melatonin produced by the body at night. The results from the current study may help us better understand how Ramelteon improves sleep and may lead to new treatments for sleep disorders such as those associated with shift work and jet lag.
