EFFECTS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION ON PERFORMANCE

This study investigated the effects of sleep deprivation on several tasks that are considered to be measures of impulsive behavior, including measures of behavioral inhibition, delay discounting, risk-taking and attention. Previous studies indicate that sleep deprivation impairs cognitive function, including cognitive functions related to decision-making and self-control. There is also some evidence that smokers and nonsmokers respond differentially to stress. In this study we hypothesized that subjects deprived of sleep for about 36 hours will perform more impulsively on delay discounting, risk-taking, and behavioral inhibition tasks. Twenty-four subjects participated in two sessions, one following a night of sleep deprivation (SD) and one after a normal night s sleep (NS). Each of the two sessions were conducted over two days beginning at 8 pm on Day 1 and ending at 8:45 pm on Day The primary outcome measures were performance on the impulsivity tasks, and secondary measures to assess the effects of the sleep deprivation included subjective ratings of fatigue and physiological measures (heart rate, blood pressure, salivary cortisol levels & urinary catecholamine levels).
