CORTICOSTEROID REDUCTION IN ASTHMA AND THE BRAIN (CRAB) PILOT PROJECT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. Mild to moderate persistent asthmatics will undergo an open-label sequential reduction of inhaled corticosteroid dosing, from 220 mcg twice daily of fluticasone propionate to no inhaled steroids, with the goal of reducing their level of asthma control. Serial neuroimaging studies (fMRI) will be obtained over this 10-week study and brain responses will be examined in the context of measures of asthma control (including measures of symptoms, physiologic responses, and airway inflammation).
