This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The eventual goal of our research is to incorporate structural and functional data from a broad range of disease entities into a multidimensional probabilistic atlas, a tool that we will validate as a surrogate measure of cerebellar function. This is essentially an anatomically oriented database incorporating clinical, genetic, and physiologic data as well as morphometric data. This framework is suited to inquiry in multiple functional domains, and our study is directed along three intersecting paths in order to validate descriptors that are both broad and deep. Here we present an integrated 7-year plan that will use an initial formulation of the atlas in carefully selected disease cohorts to answer longstanding questions of structure-function relationship in the cerebellum, then develop a method for automated image analysis that will enable widespread use of the atlas. This is a tremendous undertaking, but given the extensive equipment resources of the JHMI, the expertise and effort we have assembled from the Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Biomedical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering, and our rich patient referral base, we are uniquely positioned to accomplish this task.
