项目摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Juvenile Osteoporosis (soft or weak bones that can fracture) occurs in both male and female children and adolescents. It is an uncommon bone disease that occurs just before puberty and the cause is unknown. The rationale for the treatment is to prevent the occurrence of fractures and skeletal deformities.
Twenty children with osteoporosis will participate in the study. The drug Fosamax was shown to be effective for the treatment of osteoporosis in children in our earlier study. This study is designed to determine further the safety and efficacy of Fosamax therapy. Fosamax is considered an investigational drug by the FDA for its use during this study. The duration of the project is 3 years and the duration of the patient treatment is 2 years involving 24 months treatment period and 24 months untreated period.
