STUDY OF GLUTAMINE AND GLUTAMATE METABOLISM IN HEALTHY SUBJECTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The study proposes to quantify the rates of glutamate/glutamine metabolic utilization, conversion, and oxidative disposal in the whole body and splanchnic region of healthy subjects on a diet that follows the amino acid composition of routine and glutamine-enriched enteral feeding formulas. Understanding the metabolic rate of glutamate and glutamine will further serve to examine the effects of glutamine supplementation on support of muscle protein metabolism in healthy subjects. These subjects will serve as controls to evaluate the efficacy of glutamine supplementation in critically ill, severely catabolic patients.
