This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this K01 career development award is to provide training and supervised research in a new area of study. We will examine how cocaine use in pregnancy alters maternal physiological systems involved in maternal attachment formation in humans. Focus will be on dysregulation of maternal oxytocin activity, maternal behavior during video-taped infant interaction, and fMRI measures of maternal brain circuitry in response to infant cues. Subjects will be 48 mother-infant dyads(with prenatal cocaine use vs. drug naieve). Mothers will undergo an experimental lab with their infants, 24-hour monitoring in the home environment, and a short fMRI protocol.
