EXERCISE & URIC ACID LEVELS IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Uric acid is an endogenous antioxidant, and is the primary scavenger of an important free radical which has been implicated in several studies as causing some of the damage to the CNS in MS. For unclear reasons, MS patients have lower levels of uric acid than normal controls. Uric acid maintains a typical circadian rhthym, but in normal controls is increased in times of increased oxidative stress, including exercise and exposure to heat. MS patients?We are wondering how MS patients respond to the oxidative stress of exercise in terms of whether or not they are able to raise their uric acid levels appropriately. We want to exercise MS patients, and then check successive uric acid levels throughout the day, and compare this with normal controls.
