THE OUTCOME OF AFRICAN AMERICAN PATIENTS WITH SCLERODERMA IN RELATIONSHIP TO AUT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. African-Americans with scleroderma have a poor prognosis as manifested by high disability index, higher Disease Severity Index and decreased survival compared to Caucasian patients. The purpose of this study is to determine the outcome of African-American patients with systemic sclerosis in regards to disability, internal organ manifestations and survival. We will determine the relationship of these outcomes with the different auto-antibodies, specific genetic associations and the socio-economic status of African-American patients.
