This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In this project, we will conduct a population-based surveillance of children and adolescents with TBI. From this surveillance, we will identify a sample of pediatric patients with TBI who will be recruited and enrolled in the study. The study population will be children >1 week old and less than 18 years with a mild, moderate or severe TBI. We will include TBI due to either intentional or unintentional causes. This sample will be stratified by severity and age to allow adequate numbers of individuals at each severity level (including mild TBI) and each age group for study. Initial and baseline measurements will be obtained, and patients will be followed over time to determine outcomes from TBI. We will also enroll a control group of children with injuries other than to the head, to serve as a comparison especially for children with mild TBI. The analysis will allow us to calculate population based incidence of TBI at different ages and severities, disability from TBI over the first 36 months following injury, and risk or protective factors which interact with severity to affect outcome.
