PAROXETINE & SILDENAFIL ON PHARMACOKINETICS OF METOPROLOL, CARVEDILOL, & ATENOLO

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. There are many drug interactions that are thought to occur but are not well described. This includes drug interactions between a class of drugs called beta-blockers (for this study these drugs will include metoprolol, metoprolol extended release, carvedilol, and atenolol) and two other drugs, an antidepressant called paroxetine (Paxil) and a drug for sexual dysfunction called sildenafil (Viagra). For this study, normal volunteers will be recruited. Subjects will be randomly assigned to study groups. The primary outcomes will be changes in how the different beta-blockers are eliminated from the body when administered with the interacting drugs (Paxil and Viagra) and how the interacting drugs may affect beta blocker effects on heart rate and blood pressure The results of this study will lead to a better understanding on how to use these drugs together to treat patients more safely.'
