This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The goals of this study are: 1) to compare three methods for treating constipation; 2) to determine who is most likely to benefit from these treatments based on their medical history and the physiological tests that have been done prior to enrollment in the study; 3) to assess the impact of constipation on quality of life and on psychological traits such as depression and anxiety, and whether treatment leads to improvement in these areas. The psychological tests will also be examined to see if they predict which patients will benefit from the treatment.
