This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The overall aim of this pilot and feasibility study is to 1)develop a 12-week, theory-based, guided imagery lifestyle intervention to reduce risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in overweight Latino adolescents; and 2) to test the effects of the first 4 weeeks of the imagery intervention on stress, stress hormone (cortisol) levels, and diabetes risk factors in the study population. Focus group qualitative methodologies will be used to develop the guided imagery intervention, after which 12 subjects will be randomized into a non-intervention control group, and a study group that will receive 4 weekly stress-reduction guided imagery sessions. Pre- and post-intervention assessments of stress, salivary and urinary free cortisol, glucose tolerance, indices of insulin sensitivity and secretion, body composition, and plasma lipids will be compared between study and control groups. If guided imagery is shown to be effective at reducing stress, stress hormone levels, and diabetes risk factors, this would represent a significant, and innovative, behavioral intervention approach to the increasing problem of obesity and type 2 diabetes in overweight Latino adolescents.
