This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The specific aims of this study are: 1) to validate a one hour glucose challenge test as a convenient predictor of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT); 2) to evaluate the glucose challenge test as an opportunistic screening tool - to assess the readily ascertainable prevalence and costs of use in identifying IGT in an African American population at high risk; and, 3) to determine whether identification of IGT permits reduction in cardiovascular risk.
