PROJECT SUMMARY – Administrative Core
This application proposes to establish the Georgia Cystic Fibrosis Research and Translation Core Center at
Emory University, Augusta University, and Georgia Tech (hereafter referred to as the “Georgia CF Core
Center”), which will leverage a wide range of activities at these three institutions to solve problems associated
with this chronic, systemic disease. Research supported by the Georgia CF Core Center will focus on aspects
of CF disease central to the mission of the NIDDK, including CF-related diabetes (CFRD), the impact of CF on
nutritional status, gastrointestinal function, liver function (including CF-related liver disease, CFLD), and
metabolism, and the relationship between these complications of CF disease and lifestyle/behavioral choices
such as diet, exercise, activity, and sleep. Led by Georgia CF Core Center Director, Dr. Nael McCarty, the
Administrative Core serves to tie the three primary institutions together in pursuit of research that results in new
knowledge that is impactful upon CF clinical care. The Administrative Core is responsible for the overall
leadership, coordination, and management of the Georgia CF Core Center, including facilitating interactions
among investigators and Core users, allocation and oversight of resources, and promoting the Center. The
Administrative Core also will serve the needs of the Center Members and the CF patient/family community by
providing a high quality Enrichment and Dissemination Program that will be extended to all three primary
institutions. We will accomplish these goals through the following Specific Aims and activities:
Aim 1. Formulate and implement a strategic plan for shaping, expanding, and optimizing CF research at
Emory, Georgia Tech, and Augusta University, and other regional institutions. Rationale: A well-thought out
and executed strategic plan is crucial for effective promotion and dissemination of CF research.
Aim 2. Provide oversight and direction, monitor progress, and promote growth for all CF research programs
and Cores. Rationale: Implementing a synergistic, coordinated, and integrated program for advancing CF
research requires high-level administrative direction and oversight. The Center’s effectiveness depends on
its ability to use resources wisely, meet its goals, and as necessary, adapt Center goals as research
questions, challenges, opportunities, and support needs evolve.
Aim 3. Promote interactions and communication between Core Center institutions and investigators.
Rationale: Enabling interdisciplinary interactions, collaborations, and effective communication promotes
cohesion, creativity, and productivity.
