PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
This Administrative Supplement to Recognize Excellence in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility
(DEIA) Mentorship proposes to add a cohort of trainees (three postbaccalaureate and three undergraduate
students) for one-year training positions to foster their career development. The goal of the parent grant (R01
AR074417) is to understand genetic risk factors for osteoporosis to identify new drug targets to reduce this
massive health burden. SA1 of the parent grant is to identify novel genes regulating bone mass and mineral
accrual at bone mineral density (BMD)-associated loci in a reverse genetic screen. The proposed work will
supplement SA1 by expanding the number of genes examined in the reverse genetic screen in SubAim1A. As it
relates to the parent grant, this project adds 30 additional somatic mutants to SubAim1A with no other changes.
This project includes a career development plan that provides tailored mentor support to each individual and
helps counteract social and interpersonal barriers to success. The PI has a track record of successfully mentoring
individuals with similar career stages and goals as the trainees on this project, and has demonstrated his
commitment to DEIA through outreach, training, university leadership, and national service. The expected impact
of this project is that the trainees will gain research experience, mentor support, and career skills that will increase
their competitiveness for graduate training programs and advance their scientific and clinical career pathways.
In doing so, this project will broaden the participation and foster the development of a cohort of future biomedical
research scholars who themselves are committed to DEIA mentorship, and serve as a model that informs future
development of culturally responsive training environments.
