The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene’s Proposal to Add to the Capability and Capability of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Food Emergency Response Network

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT    The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is Wisconsin's public and environmental  health laboratory. As part of the University of Wisconsin‐Madison, the WSLH is committed to  exploring new ideas which benefit the state, the nation and the world. The Radiochemistry Unit  of WSLH offers a wide range of radiological testing services to maintain its testing capability and  capacity to rapidly and accurately respond to food emergencies under the FDA FERN  Radiological Cooperative Agreement Program. Instrumentation used to support screening and  confirmatory testing under this program include gamma and alpha spectrometers, gas  proportional counters, and a liquid scintillation counter. A cadre of scientists is qualified to  sustain approved FDA FERN CAP methodologies. The lab is certified and routinely inspected by  the Environmental Protection Agency and a complete Quality Assurance and Quality Control  Program is maintained, assuring high quality results.    WSLH will continue to use FERN FDA Radiological Cooperative Agreement funding to strengthen  and improve the lab's capability and capacity to rapidly and accurately identify radiological  contaminants in food and environmental samples. The WSLH also aims to improve the lab's  existing Strontium‐90 in milk method, validate additional food matrices with existing methods  and develop a soil fusion procedure to enhance its capability. The WSLH staff will attend and  contribute to annual network meetings and serve on FERN committees and contribute to  special projects offered by the FERN NPO. The WSLH will furthermore maintain FERN  methodologies and agrees to actively participate in proficiency testing and exercise offerings. In  case of a large‐scale radiological event, WSLH will assist the FDA and other network partners  with performing needed testing and provide electronic data reporting as directed by the FERN  NPO. The WSLH seeks to provide method development and method validation for FERN  methodologies in collaboration with network partners.
