Recognizing the inevitable evolution towards wireless ubiquity, we aim through the proposed research effort to develop and evaluate viable system alternatives and communication techniques for realizing next-generation wireless access and wireless networking devices. Such devices will provide a much improved alternative to current wireless local-area networks (WLAN) in terms of data rates, quality-of-service, security, and immunity to interference and intrusion. We anticipate such alternatives to bring about new solutions and standards for the wireless LANs and 4th Generation (4G) wireless technology before the end of the decade. In the near future, we will have wireless networks eliminating the need for Ethernet cabling and cumbersome wiring closets in the Enterprise and campuses. ireless setup boxes will beam multiple HDTV channels across the home to TV monitors, and multi-hop wireless mesh networks will make Internet and voice access available at low or no-cost anywhere in convention centers, airports, along highways, etc. We propose a new powerful framework for future WLAN access points and air interfaces that can be implemented using a software-defined radio (SDR) approach. This framework will combine the advantages of multiple-antennas, or MIMO (or multi-input, multi-output) systems, with orthogonal multi-carrier(MC-)CDMA systems. The benefits of such framework for are: high data rates provided by MIMO techniques, high spectrum efficiency and lower multipath distortion using orthogonal carriers, and interference rejection from CDMA. Considering that the difficulty in solving these problems is much higher for high data rates, there are a number of systems comparisons and tradeoffs which must be considered. The distinguishing aspect of our approach is its emphasis on cross-layer interaction and optimization, and on developing a software-defined or programmable PHY system design strategy.
